The Bread Connection
What better way to connect with others than through food? Such a basic and essential part of all our lives, food has always had a way of bringing people together like nothing else can. As an introvert (yes, it's true) food has always been the open door for me to get me out of my shell. Talking about food, sharing food, making food, sharing recipes, sharing favourite spots to eat and travel food stories, sharing 'what's in my snack bag'- are all ways I've managed to deepen my connections with other people-through food. Let's face it - I looooove food! And I'm pretty open about it too. *now that's stating the obvious*
When I started on my sourdough journey over a year ago, bread became the new hot topic. Even then, it was hard not to notice my passion was growing hard and fast by anyone who took interest! I would likely tell them even more than they needed to know (sometimes getting the look of "is this girl serious"), but I usually would end a conversation with, "I'll give you a loaf to try, let me know what you think?" Needless to say, not many people objected. Often times they'd end up with a loaf without asking as I would just assume they wouldn't refuse when I showed up with a fresh loaf of homemade sourdough! And this is how I started making new connections with people that I never imagined I ever would. Who would have thought - something so simple as bread?!
So after giving away more loaves than I could count, and being proded by more than a few people to sell my loaves and teach my new found passion with them, I began connecting like never before. Now, like I said, this introvert (again, true story) now turned extrovert when it comes to food, never blinked an eye at all the new connections I made through bread until recently - then it was too late to retreat into my hidey hole. The smell of bread gives me away every time and this passion is just to big to hide away.
With my weekly deliveries and blogging I have become more aware of how food brings us all together-especially through these strange and sometimes tough days. I feel so incredibly privilaged to see so many familiar (and some new) faces everytime I drop off an order, and it's become the highlight of my week. With all this distancing, it's a real blessing to have been given the ability to help people stay connected (and me stay connected with others!) through the gift of food. Bread has been a great way for me to open up a conversation, and there's always an ease that I find comes when I'm chatting about food.
So now you know my secret. If you want to start a conversation with me, just start with something that involves food. Just be prepared that it'll be a hard conversation to end if you're in any type of hurry;)
I'd encourage any of you who might be finding it difficult these days to connect with all the social distancing-try food. Make food and drop it off, have a physical distance outside meal with a friend, share a meal over Zoom or Skype (or whatever social media you fancy these days), support your local restaurant by ordering take out and share if your able, or...so many possibilities! Just be safe and smart about it (but ya'll know that already:))
"If you really want to make a friend (or see a friend), go to someone's house (but safely distance) and eat with him (outside) - the people (or person) who give you their food give you their heart." Casar Chaviz (me)

My dear friend Dave is an essential worker and has been working hard to keep people sane these days. I thought he could use a little boost so I showed up with Mexican (our favourite) and a few soda pops from the local brewery-as well as fresh bread:) Social distancing on the porch in the sun and discussing the local architecture was just the medicine we both needed that day! We were also missing our concert night that week which involved dinner first, then awesome live music - so this was a good substitute. *he snapped this photo w/the beautifully renovated Wortley heritage building in the background One of my favourite days is my London delivery day-as I get to drive on open country roads and visit my Amish friends; picking up eggs, flour and other goodies. I just love farm fresh eggs and getting some good ol' country fresh air and sunshine. Red Fife flour stock up. Dropping off a Love Loaf this week for a friend, I reached back to grab a bread from the backseat to drop on his porch and noticed the flat of eggs I had just picked up from the farm. I thought, hey-a few of these would go great with that Olive Rosemary bread! The only "container" I could find in the car for a few eggs was a ziplock baggy. I got a pen, drew a happy face on one of the eggs, and loaded the bag as full as I could get it. He knows I'm pretty quirky so guessed right away it was me who did a drive by drop off. Actually, probably the bread that gave me away;) *he also took a picture of the eggs in his fridge and sent to me lol #friendsthatknowmebest |
Then I drolled all over the photo he sent me of his breakfast the next morning!
Another highlight for me and ultimate connection, is seeing the faces of the people I love enjoy the love I put into food.
My mom is a GREAT taste taster - and I know she loves cinnamon buns!
